The purpose of this volume is:

  • to provide a dedicated volume of in-depth information on the West European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)

    and
  • to develop a framework and data outline for developing new technology for Wildpro which will enable multi-authoring and linkages to other databases.

We particularly wish to thank:

  • Nigel Reeve for reviewing the Natural History section, Dru Burdon and Kay Bullen for reviewing the Husbandry and Management section and Tiffany Blackett (WIN) for reviewing the Veterinary section; any remaining errors are the responsibility of the editors.
  • Tim Thomas (RSPCA) for his hard work, professionalism, encouragement and guidance.
  • The British Hedgehog Preservation Society, the Hedgehog Helpline, David MacDonald, The Mammals Trust UK and the publishers of "Animal Welfare" and "The Veterinary Record", for kindly giving permission for us to include their documents in our Electronic Library.
  • All those who have generously provided pictures to illustrate this volume, including Dru Burdon, Glen Cousquer, Hedgehog Helpline, I.F. Keymer, Dora Lambert, Becki Lawson, A.D. Malley, Pat Morris, Nigel Reeve, Andrew Routh, the RSPCA, the Royal Veterinary College and the Talnotry Avian Care Trust.

Pictures and documents were prepared for this volume of Wildpro by Alastair Smyth (WIN).

Proof-reading was provided by Nicola Blay (International Zoo Veterinary Group); any remaining typographical errors are the responsibility of the editors.

* Becki Lawson is now at the Institute of Zoology, The Zoological Society of London
