Fluoroacetate/Fluoroacetamide:

Summary Information
Classification Chemicals / Complex Chemical Agents / Type:

(This chemicals section is currently predominantly used in Wildpro to link different data types and demonstrate inter-relationships. It does not contain detailed information on the chemical itself.)

Alternative Names
  • Sodium fluoroacetate (1080)
  • Sodium fluoride acetamide (1081)
Notes
  • Rodenticide
  • Both the above compounds produce similar effects.
  • Some countries (e.g. USA) may severely restrict use of this class of rodenticide.

Sodium fluoroacetate (1080):

  • Colourless, odourless, tasteless, water-soluble chemical. (J1.11.w3).
  • Highly toxic to all animals after ingestion and subsequent metabolism to to fluoroacetate (FAC) and then to fluorocitrate.
  • Fluorocitrate inhibits the enzyme aconitase and thereby blocks the tricarboxylic acid cycle which is needed for cellular energy production.(J1.11.w3).
Taxa Groups (hyperlinked if included as Wildpro Modules) containing host species which have been recorded as infected by this organism.
Associated Waterfowl Diseases Fluroacetamide Toxicity (1080 poisoning, Fluroacetamide toxicity) Waterfowl Disease Summary Poisoning due to ingestion of rodenticide in treated wheat, causing weakness, convulsions, anorexia, prostration and death.
Waterfowl in which the associated disease has been recorded.
