Beached oil may become entrained in sediments, and remobilise on subsequent tides. The speed and effectiveness of operations to prevent further loss of oil, containment and recovery of spilled oil, and cleaning of contaminated sites will often be the most significant factors protecting the wildlife in habitats impacted by oil spills.
