Selenium:

Summary Information
Classification Chemicals / Metals, Minerals & Simple Molecules / Type:

(This chemicals section is currently predominantly used in Wildpro to link different data types and demonstrate inter-relationships. It does not contain detailed information on the chemical itself.)

Alternative Names Se (Chemical symbol)
Notes
  • Selenium is an essential trace element, which is also toxic in large amounts.
  • It has a close interaction with Vitamin E and other antioxidant nutrients; some mutual "sparing effects may be seen, but minimum levels of all required for proper metabolic function.
  • Selenium is a constituent of two important enzymes (glutathione peroxidase and phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase) which protect tissue against oxidative damage from unsaturated fats in cell membranes; also a component of iodothironine 5'-deiodinase, involved in converting thyroxine to its active form.
