  • Food may be physically inaccessible for a variety of reasons, including ice or snow covering the food source, or food out of reach by being too high for small individuals to reach or behind a barrier which the animal is unable to penetrate.
  • N.B. food also may be psychologically inaccessible, e.g. to subordinate individuals when aggressive individuals do not allow them to approach the food.
  • Oiled waterfowl such as seaducks may have their normal food made inaccessible due to loss of plumage integrity/waterproofing (and therefore insulation and buoyancy) making entrance into the water unacceptable in terms of heat loss and effort required to stay afloat.
