  • Many waterfowl species are highly aquatic and spend a large proportion of their time on water, eating, roosting defaecating and mating on water.
  • Lack of water for normal behaviour may lead to a variety of problems. Waterfowl maintained off water e.g. in hospital accommodation may be inhibited from defaecating at normal intervals.
  • Highly aquatic species are particularly prone to lesions from pressure and abrasion if maintained off water for any length of time.
  • Lack of water sufficient for mating has been linked to damage to the phallus.
