  • Direct contact with cold surfaces may cause heat loss.
  • Direct contact with freezing surfaces, including e.g. ice, snow, bare metal used as perches, in sub-zero (centigrade; equivalent to below 32F) temperatures, may result in direct tissue damage - frostbite.
  • Most waterfowl are resistant to frostbite if there is an area of open water in which they can swim, but tropical species are recognized as being more susceptible.
