  • Water may be physically inaccessible for a variety of reasons, including ice covering the water source, the whole water source being frozen, water being out of reach behind a barrier which the animal is unable to penetrate, or the animal being trapped in an entangling object out of reach of water.
  • N.B. water also may be psychologically inaccessible, e.g. to subordinate individuals when aggressive individuals do not allow them to approach the water.
  • Oiled birds may have their normal fresh water source made inaccessible due to loss of plumage integrity making it impossible for them to fly to fresh water.
