Bilirubin - "A bile pigment, orange-yellow in colour, produced by the breakdown of haem (from haemoglobin) and the reduction of biliverdin. Normally bilirubin circulates in blood and is taken up by the liver where it is converted to a water-soluble form which is excreted in bile. Levels of bilirubin in the blood increase mainly if liver cells fail to excrete bile or if the bile ducts are blocked, but can also occur if the breakdown of red blood cells is increased."
