Fluorescence - "a substance is said to be fluorescent if upon absorbing light activity of one wavelength ("excitation" or "activation" light) it emits light of another wavelength, usually with 10-7 seconds. Because of energy losses, the emitted light is almost always of longer wavelength than the exciting radiation. If the absorbed light is emitted over a longer period than above, the substance is phosphorescent. Both conditions are special cases of the general phenomenon of luminescence."(B92 - mycological [fungal] and histopathological terms)
