Brief Overview / Significance
  • Provides powers to control both the keeping and importation of certain non-indigenous species of animals which have become established in Great Britain. 
  • Licences are issued by Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (now Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)).
  • It is an offence to release animals of these species or to allow them to escape.
  • The occupier of land on which animals of these species are found must report their presence to MAFF (now DEFRA).
  • The importation of these species and of hares is restricted.

Grey Squirrel (Prohibition of Importation and Keeping) Order 1937

  • Requires anyone keeping a grey squirrel to have a licence to do so.
  • This includes persons keeping injured grey squirrels.

Mink (Keeping) Order 1987

  • Requires a licence for the keeping of Mustela vison - American mink.
  • Requirements of the licence state restrictions on how mink have to be kept, including the provision of a "mink-proof" boundary fence with an overhang.
  • There is no exemption for keeping injured mink without a licence.
