Guidelines for veterinary surgeons

The purpose of this booklet:
This publication is designed to assist veterinary surgeons who may be called to attend a stranded cetacean (whale, dolphin, or porpoise) and should be used in conjunction with the RSPCA booklet, Stranded whales, dolphins and porpoises: a first aid guide

The first aid guide stresses the importance of having a veterinary surgeon in attendance. This booklet seeks to provide assistance on a clinical level and aid in the prognostic process.

While it may prove useful in reaching a prognosis, the information given here is not intended to be comprehensive since knowledge in this area is incomplete. If you are able to add information in light of your own experience please direct your comments to: The Wildlife Department, RSPCA Headquarters, Wilberforce Way, Southwater, Horsham, West Sussex RH13 7WN.
