"ProMED-mail
The global Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases:
A program of the International Society for Infectious Diseases

The ProMED-mail electronic outbreak reporting system was inaugurated on the Internet in August 1994 to monitor emerging infectious diseases globally.

It is the only outbreak rapid reporting system open to all sources and free of political restraints.

All reports are screened by expert Moderators before posting.

A central goal of ProMED-mail is to establish a direct partnership among scientists and doctors in all parts of the world, by making it possible for all to share information and discuss emerging disease concerns on a timely basis. ProMED-mail welcomes the participation of all interested colleagues, students and interested people outside the health and biomedical professions.

There is no charge for subscribing.

ProMED-mail now reaches more than 20,000 direct subscribers in over 160 countries. In October 1999, five years after its founding by the Federation of American Scientists with the technical assistance of SatelLife, ProMED-mail became a program of the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), a non-profit professional organization with headquarters in Boston and membership around the world.

Web services for ProMED-mail are provided as a public service by the Oracle Corporation. E-mail services are provided at the Harvard School of Public Health.

History of ProMED-mail
Reorganization
As of October, 1999, ProMED-mail became an official program of the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), with headquarters located in the Longwood medical complex in Boston, MA, USA.

On October 12, ProMED-mail's e-mail services moved to the Harvard School of Public Health. ProMED-mail's new e-mail address is promed@promedmail.org. All mail sent to the old address will be forwarded.

This new, enhanced ProMED-mail website has been donated by the Oracle Corporation.

These moves will help ProMED-mail meet the growing demand for prompt, comprehensive and accurate reporting of emerging infectious disease and toxin outbreaks.

The mission of the International Society for Infectious Diseases, ProMED-mail's new sponsor, is to bring together individuals from around the world who are interested in infectious diseases, including infectious disease specialists, microbiologists, immunologists, epidemiologists, public health workers, parasitologists, virologists, mycologists, molecular biologists, and others with similar concerns.

The main goals of ISID are to increase the knowledge base of infectious diseases through research and to enhance the professional development of the individual in this discipline; to extend and transfer technical expertise in microbiology and infectious diseases, especially in resource-constrained areas; and to develop, through partnerships, strategies for control and cost-effective management of infectious diseases. The ProMED-mail program at ISID is managed by Dr. Tim Brewer, ISID Program Director, Susan Krumplitsch, ISID Program Coordinator, and an enlarged Policy Committee including the present members. The present Moderators and Managing Editor will continue.
