"Status

An intergovernmental organisation created by the International Agreement of 25 January 1924, signed by 28 countries.
In March 2001, the OIE comprised 157 Member Countries.

Missions

• inform Governments of the occurrence and course of animal diseases throughout the world, and of ways to control these diseases
• coordinate, at the international level, studies devoted to the surveillance and control of animal diseases
• harmonise regulations for trade in animals and animal products among Member Countries.

Organisation

The OIE operates under the authority and control of an International Committee formed by permanent Delegates designated by the Governments of the Member Countries.

The activities of the organisation are conducted by a Central Bureau, headed by a Director General who is appointed by the International Committee. The Central Bureau implements the resolutions of the Committee, which are drawn up with support from elected Commissions:

• Administrative Commission
• Regional Commissions
• Specialist Commissions

The financial resources of the OIE are derived mainly from regular annual contributions and exceptional contributions from Member Countries.

International Relations

The OIE enjoys permanent working relations with over 20 other international organisations, including:

• the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
• the World Health Organization (WHO)
• the World Trade Organization (WTO)
• the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA)
• the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)
• Regional International Organization for Plant Protection and Animal Health ( OIRSA: Organismo Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria)
• Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) "
