Broad degree offerings

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University is the only place in the Netherlands where veterinarians are trained. This means that our Faculty is the centre of expertise and point of reference for veterinary issues for the entire country, and increasingly for the world abroad as well. Our activities include providing primary health and welfare care for a variety of types of animals, monitoring food safety and the prevention of zoonoses (diseases transferable from animals to humans). The Faculty is considered one of the leading veterinary medicine faculties in Europe and is ranked in the top five world-wide.

Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences

IRAS, the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences, is an interfacultary research institute within the faculties Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, Sciences of Utrecht University. Support is also provided by the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in Bilthoven, and by TNO Quality of Life, Zeist.

The mission of IRAS is to provide education and research on the human health risks of exposure to potentially harmful agents in the environment, at the workplace and through the food chain. Effects on ecosystems are also considered.

The research takes places within three domains: Toxicology, Environmental Epidemiology and Veterinary Public Health.
