Individual Methods for Enclosure Design
Cubbing Dens

The methods outlined in this section relate to features of enclosure construction and layout which may be used to enhance the living conditions of animals, including the use of shelter areas, vegetation, viewing platforms and climbing structures.

Cubbing Dens

Method Each female should be provided with a choice of two or more secure locations to take cubs to, providing for the natural behaviour of moving young to a new site every few days or weeks.
Species Red Panda, Bush Dog, Meerkat, Cats, other mammalian Carnivores.
Purpose Provide opportunity to select a suitable den to raise offspring in, and to move dens as would occur in the wild.
Pro With several dens to choose from, it is likely the female will find one that is suitable and secure. Old dens can be cleaned without disturbing animals once they move.
Con Several dens require more cleaning than a single den.
