Individual Methods for Enclosure Design
Hessian Hammock

The methods outlined in this section relate to features of enclosure construction and layout which may be used to enhance the living conditions of animals, including the use of shelter areas, vegetation, viewing platforms and climbing structures.

Hessian Hammock

Method Hessian Hammock. Large piece of hessian sacking suspended from ceiling by ropes or chains attached to each corner.
Species Chimpanzee, De Brazza’s Monkey, Lion-tailed Macaque, most other monkeys.
Purpose Mobile soft-textured platform used as a swing, to lie or sleep in, and if filled with straw, as a mobile foraging area.
Pro --
Con Should ensure that when monkeys jump into the hammock it will not swing round and trap them. Chimpanzees require very sturdy sacking.
