Individual Methods for Enclosure Design

The methods outlined in this section relate to features of enclosure construction and layout which may be used to enhance the living conditions of animals, including the use of shelter areas, vegetation, viewing platforms and climbing structures.


Method Independent, controllable lighting for each enclosure.
Species Reptiles, Amphibians.
Purpose To provide suitable environmental conditions for different species, and simulate seasonal changes in light.
Pro Controlled changes in lighting conditions allows animals to be brought into breeding condition.

Improvements Multiple lights automatically switching off and on at different times to create the effect of the sun passing overhead.
Comments Breeding in many animals, particularly reptiles, depends on triggers such as changing day length.
