Individual Methods for Enclosure Design
Running Water

The methods outlined in this section relate to features of enclosure construction and layout which may be used to enhance the living conditions of animals, including the use of shelter areas, vegetation, viewing platforms and climbing structures.

Running Water

Method Circulated with a pump, flowing down miniature waterfalls into pools.
Species All non-arid dwelling Reptiles, Frogs.
Purpose Keeps water aerated and prevents stagnation. Provides a source of mobile and acoustic interest.
Pro Continually moving water increases the general humidity of the enclosure.
Con Pumps may be damaged if water level drops due to evaporation or leakage.
Improvements --
Comments Water level should be topped up daily. Some desert dwelling species may require water, for example, the Gila Monster, which is imperfectly adapted to dry conditions will soak in a pool if given the opportunity.
