Individual Methods for Feeding Methods - Device
External Puzzle Box

The feeding methods outlined in this section require prior preparation in terms of making devices for use by the animals, including items that must be opened or manipulated to obtain food, frames to hold food items, and containers that randomly release food such as insects.

External Puzzle Box

Method Large box hung on mesh outside cage. Back of box opens to put food inside, front has a series of hand-sized holes leading into pigeon holes containing straw and the food, which is found by touch.
Species Siamang Gibbon, Monkeys.
Purpose Puzzle feeder requiring the monkeys to rely on the sense of touch.
Pro Can be refilled without entering the enclosure or disturbing the monkeys. Attached to the cage with hooks, so easily moved.
Con --
Improvements Varying size of holes allows smaller individuals greater access.
Comments Larger males find the manipulation required difficult, so the device is generally left to the females and young.
