Individual Methods for Feeding Methods - Device
Grape Feeder

The feeding methods outlined in this section require prior preparation in terms of making devices for use by the animals, including items that must be opened or manipulated to obtain food, frames to hold food items, and containers that randomly release food such as insects.

Grape Feeder

Method Two foot pipe with 3 cm mesh at bottom end and a ‘bucket’ handle at the top. Grapes or other fruit placed inside, and the feeder hung from a tree branch or other raised structure around 4-6 feet off the ground.
Species Cassowary.
Purpose To provide a suitable holding container from which birds can pluck fruit as they would from branches in the wild.
Pro Allows fruit to be foraged from a high position rather than scattered on the ground.
Con --
Improvements Provide a variety of hanging locations, with easy access for the keepers.
Comments If feeder is hung up higher than the birds can stretch, Cassowaries will jump up to pluck the fruit. In addition to providing exercise, jumping can be used as an indicator of injuries which prevent energetic movement, such as dislocations.
Frequency of Use 3 Times per Week
