Individual Methods for Feeding
Methods - Device
The feeding methods outlined in this section
require prior preparation in terms of making devices for use by the animals, including
items that must be opened or manipulated to obtain food, frames to hold food items, and
containers that randomly release food such as insects.
||Two foot pipe with 3 cm mesh at
bottom end and a bucket handle at the top. Grapes or other fruit placed
inside, and the feeder hung from a tree branch or other raised structure around 4-6 feet
off the ground.
||To provide a suitable holding
container from which birds can pluck fruit as they would from branches in the wild.
||Allows fruit to be foraged from a
high position rather than scattered on the ground.
||Provide a variety of hanging
locations, with easy access for the keepers.
||If feeder is hung up higher than
the birds can stretch, Cassowaries will jump up to pluck the fruit. In addition to
providing exercise, jumping can be used as an indicator of injuries which prevent
