Individual Methods for Feeding Methods - Practices
Hand Feeding

The practices outlined in this section relate to methods of food presentation that do not require the use of special materials or devices. Scatter feeds, use of specific locations, and methods of ensuring that specific animals receive required medications and dietary supplements are dealt with.

Hand Feeding

Method All penguins are fed fish by hand by the keepers each day.
Species Penguins.
Purpose To ensure that all of the birds are healthy, and get a share of food. Additionally, birds become used to the presence of the keepers, so are not stressed by their presence during the breeding season.
Pro Makes feeding of dietary supplements such as vitamins, and medications easy, as they can be placed inside fish fed to specific birds.
Con Very time consuming.
Improvements --
Comments With over 200 birds in the penguin enclosure, monitoring and general management would be almost impossible without hand feeding.
