Individual Methods for Feeding
Methods - Device
The feeding methods outlined in this section
require prior preparation in terms of making devices for use by the animals, including
items that must be opened or manipulated to obtain food, frames to hold food items, and
containers that randomly release food such as insects.
||Blunt wooden 3 inch spikes on a
wood block suspended from the ceiling. Apples and other fruit are driven onto the spikes
and must be worked off by the animal.
||White-faced Saki, Marmosets and
||Allows "picking" of
fruit - more natural. The spikes can be used as an additional perch by birds.
||Potentially harmful to larger
monkeys if they should fall on the unloaded device, so should not be used with them. Some
birds will chew the spike as well as the fruit.
||In free ranging marmoset
enclosure, spikes located in the trees are lowered via a rope.
