Manipulatory & Play Objects
Ice Blocks

The methods outlined in this section relate to the use of both artificial and natural substrates and items for physical and mental stimulation, including floating toys, nesting materials and posts for claw scraping and scratching to relieve skin irritations.

Ice Blocks

Method Large blocks of ice thrown into the pool area of the enclosure.
Species Polar Bear, Bush Dog, Short-clawed Otter, Penguins.
Purpose Floating manipulatory object providing different sensory inputs from objects of the same temperature as the water.
Pro Helps to keep animals and the water cool in hot summer weather.
Con --
Improvements Freeze some food, for example, fruit inside the ice block, or use fruit juice to flavour the ice.
Comments Polar Bear and otters will chew the ice. Use large rubber or metal containers for freezing, as plastic containers split and break as water freezes and expands.
Frequency of Use Once per Fortnight.
