Manipulatory & Play Objects
Mobile ‘Punchbags’

The methods outlined in this section relate to the use of both artificial and natural substrates and items for physical and mental stimulation, including floating toys, nesting materials and posts for claw scraping and scratching to relieve skin irritations.

Mobile ‘Punchbags’

Method Heavy duty boomer balls, plastic floats, metal beer barrels, or water filled plastic containers hung from ropes in the enclosure. As they are struck, the objects swing about.
Species Rhino, Cats.
Purpose Mobile manipulatory object. Also provides a moving object for rhinos to manipulate to deal with itches by scratching its hide against the swinging object.

Improvements For cats, put the ball in the enclosure of a potential prey species such as peccary or tapir first, so that it will have their scent on it.
Comments Swinging objects are useful for cats to learn co-ordination and balance for both movement and for striking moving prey, in the absence of real prey.
