Manipulatory & Play Objects
The methods outlined in this section relate to
the use of both artificial and natural substrates and items for physical and mental
stimulation, including floating toys, nesting materials and posts for claw scraping and
scratching to relieve skin irritations.
||Heavy duty boomer balls, plastic
floats, metal beer barrels, or water filled plastic containers hung from ropes in the
enclosure. As they are struck, the objects swing about.
||Mobile manipulatory object. Also
provides a moving object for rhinos to manipulate to deal with itches by scratching its
hide against the swinging object.
||For cats, put the ball in the
enclosure of a potential prey species such as peccary or tapir first, so that it will have
their scent on it.
||Swinging objects are useful for
cats to learn co-ordination and balance for both movement and for striking moving prey, in
the absence of real prey.
