Social Husbandry
Penguin Parade

The methods outlined in this section relate to the means of controlling breeding, and providing interaction and social stimulation, including the use of group housing, both of the same species and of different species together, and movements of individuals or groups into different environments.

Penguin Parade

Method Groups of birds are allowed out of the enclosure for a walk around the public pathways, guided by the keeping staff.
Species Gentoo, Macaroni and King Penguins.
Purpose To allow the public to see penguins closely, and allow the birds to experience areas outwith their enclosure. This routine also allows penguins to be walked during transfers to alternative enclosures.
Pro Very popular with the public, which stimulates their interest.
Con Public must be watched to prevent them coming into too close contact with the birds.
Improvements --
Comments The Penguin Parade originally began several years ago when a gate was left open by mistake, some of the birds wandered out, along the public walkway, and back to the enclosure. The event has become a tradition at the zoo, though is more organised now !
