Varying Keeping Staff

The methods outlined in this section relate to the means of controlling breeding, and providing interaction and social stimulation, including the use of group housing, both of the same species and of different species together, and movements of individuals or groups into different environments.

Varying Keeping Staff

Method Rotation of staff to work with different animals on different days varies routine for the animals, as each person carries out work differently, and therefore acts as an unpredictable environmental factor.
Species Most Birds.
Purpose Provides variation for the animals as different people use different routines, and also allows individual keepers to build up experience with a wide variety of animals.
Pro Allows keepers to develop experience with a wider variety of animals.
Con Some animals (for example, Flamingo’s) require consistency in the daily routine, and can react badly to such a system.
Improvements --
Comments Does not disrupt keeping routine, as it is integral to the day to day husbandry.
