This information has been provided by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and is supplied in its original format.

The JNCC is the Government's wildlife adviser, undertaking national and international conservation work on behalf of the three country nature conservation agencies English Nature, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Countryside Council for Wales. Our work is also supported by the Environment and Heritage Service (Northern Ireland). This work contributes to sustaining and enriching biological diversity, enhancing geological features and sustaining natural systems.

In particular, the JNCC's core duties are:

* to advise ministers on the development of policies for, or affecting, nature conservation in Great Britain and internationally;

* to provide advice and knowledge to anyone on nature conservation issues affecting Great Britain and internationally;

* to establish common standards throughout Great Britain for the monitoring of nature conservation and for research into nature conservation and the analysis of the results; and to commission or support research which the Committee deems relevant to the special functions.

 Because the JNCC has a statutory remit, much of its work is of a technical or scientific nature, therefore its main audience is primarily government agencies and departments, NGOs in the environment sector and conservation practitioners within the UK and Europe.
