Disease Agents Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), a water-soluble vitamin. "Involved in nucleic acid and methyl synthesis and carbohydrate and fat metabolism. One of its main enzyme functions involves isomerization of methylmalonyl coenzyme A to form succinyl CoA" (B32.2.w23).

General Description Slow growth, myodystrophy of the legs, poor hatchability and high mortality of young birds; hydroencephalocoele may be seen in hatchlings from vitamin B12-deficient females (B16.19.w1, B35.13.w5).
Further Information
  • Requirements in ducks appear very low; ducklings usually have sufficient levels from hatching (B13.46.w1).
  • Prevention: Ensure sufficient vitamin B12 in the diet: minimum requirements for birds 0.009-0.25 mg/kg feed, with suggested level for Pekin ducks of 0.01mg/kg starter/breeder feed, 0.005mg/kg for grower/finisher diet (B13.46.w1, B16.19.w1, B35.13.w5).
