Alternative Names
  • Egg Yolk Peritonitis
  • Egg-related Septic Peritonitis

See also: Egg Binding

Disease Agents Yolk in the peritoneum from a ruptured egg, or retained egg in oviduct; usually secondary bacterial infection in severe cases (B11.39.w7, B13.29.w8, P3.1995.w1).

Non-infectious Agent(s) --
Physical Agent(s)
General Description Inflammation of the oviduct secondary to egg retention or egg rupture (See: Egg Binding).
  • Clinical signs: Depression, weight loss, inappetance, sometimes ascites, death (B11.39.w7, B12.36.w3, B13.46.w1, B13.29.w8, P3.1995.w1).
  • Clinical pathology: Raised white cell count in blood and in peritoneal fluid, relative heterophilia (B11.39.w11, B12.36.w3).
  • Gross post mortem findings: Ruptured yolk (yellow green or brown fluid, or yellowish cheesy inspissated mass) in peritoneal cavity, or necrotic oviduct around a retained egg. Associated peritonitis (inflammation of the peritoneum). May be infection of other organs also (B16.19.w1, B13.29.w8, P3.1995.w1).
Further Information
  • Inflammation may be mild if no secondary bacterial infection.
  • Severe peritonitis if bacterial infection involved: Colibacillosis is common.
  • Treatment:
  • Supportive care - heat, fluids, nutritional supplementation as required.
  • Antibiotics - long term treatment required.
  • Surgery - removal of yolk/egg material, flushing with large volumes of fluids (saline) and antimicrobial agents.
  • Salpingohysterectomy may also be required.
  • N.B. In waterfowl, pathology is usually severe and prognosis is generally considered to be poor.

(B11.39.w7, B11.41.w9, B12.36.w3, B13.29.w8, P3.1995.w1).
