Disease Agents A wide variety of bacteria may be involved; Escherichia coli, Riemerella anatipestifer and Pasteurella multocida were found most frequently in a survey of salpingitis found at slaughter in domestic ducks and geese. (J6.24.w1, B12.36.w3).

General Description
  • Inflammation of the oviduct, usually associated with infection, sometimes with associated peritonitis.
  • May be subclinical, produce signs such as mild depression, infertility or abnormally shaped/coloured eggs, or in severe cases abdominal distention, anorexia and cachexia.
  • May be seen in juveniles (e.g. ducks less than seven weeks old) as well as adults.

Further Information
  • May be seen due to ascending bacterial infection, or associated with airsacculitis, pneumonia, liver infection or generalized infection. Also seen associated with mechanical injury related to Egg Binding (B12.36.w3).
  • May be found only at post mortem examination.
