| General Description |
- Emphysematous (air-filled) swelling under the skin.
- May be localized, e.g in the neck region, or generalized affecting large
areas of the body.

- Frequently no apparent causal event.
- Usually self-limiting.
- Air may be allowed to escape by creating one or two small holes (0.5mm
diameter) in the skin over the affected area, using a small cauterizing instrument. The
hole(s) may be left to close naturally (over about seven to ten days).
