General Description

  • Clinical signs: Growth suppression, lameness, curled toes, enlarged hocks (sometimes discoloured green due to haemorrhage). Perosis (Perosis) (lateral rotation of one or both legs with slipped gastrocnemius (Achilles) tendon), sometimes haemorrhages in thigh muscles, probably trauma-related. Rib cage deformity, with sternum twisted and deviated inward, thoracic capacity volume reduced.

(J5.9.w1).

Further Information
  • Lameness by one week at 0.1% of feed .
  • Mortality is dose-dependant. Deaths within two weeks at 0.1% of feed.

Histopathology:

Cartilage projections deep into secondary spongiosa and columns of cartilage cells disorganized. With gentian violet stain, globules of basophilic-staining material associated with bone canaliculi.
  • Thyroid - hypertrophy and hyperplasia of thyroid follicles.
  • Aorta - focal areas intimal proliferation and disruption of internal elastic membrane after six weeks on toxic diet. Rarely focal medial hyalinization.
