Although it identifies that taxonomic interrelationships of species (see "header") it does not currently contain detailed information on the bird species itself. As WILDPro is developed, we will gradually convert these pages into full Species pages.

The taxonomy of birds is still under review and the A World Checklist of Birds by Burt L. Monroe, Jr and Charles G. Sibley (B89) has been chosen as the primary reference. The taxonomic structure will be amended when new editions or complete references are identified by the scientific world as the recognized primary references for taxonomy.

• In London: In the London Area, a "passage migrant and occasional breeder." Seen e.g. on reservoirs, Rainham Marsh, The Wetland Centre at Barnes (WWT), and along the Lea Valley. (J322.65.w1)

• food - mainly aquatic invertebrates, particularly insects, also some molluscs, amphibians and small fish. Young fed mostly insects.
• feeding behaviour - surface dives in shallow water, also surface dips

Nest:

• location and structure - platform of floating vegetation anchored to other ground cover in reeds or sedges
• nest building - male and female
• breeding structure - monogamous

Eggs:

• markings - not patterned
• number of eggs - 3-4 (1-6)
• broods - one (sometimes two) brood(s) per season
• incubation - by male and female; 20-22 days

Nestling:

• development - Precocial; fed by parents
• parental caring for young - by male and female
• fledging - approximately 21 days
