Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus - Domestic rabbit

French Lop

Alternative names:

  • Franse Hangoor (The Netherlands)
  • Deutsche Widder (Germany)
  • Belier Francais (France)

Ring size: H (D374)

Weight: Minimum 4.535 kg (10 lb) adult weight; should be as large as possible. (D374)

Additional Information:

  • This is a massive, thickset rabbit with a short, broad, well muscled body and little visible neck. The broad, thick, well furred ears have rounded ends and are carried close to the cheeks. Self, agouti pattern, shaded, other and butterfly colours are recognised. (D374)
  • These very large rabbits are generally quite placid if handled well. They need a lot of room, either as a house rabbit or in a large hutch and pen. Not suitable as a pet to be with small children, or in a limited space. (B622.3.w3)
  • Long-established in France, these rabbits are calm, good natured and even tempered; they are fast growing. Because of their size they are not common as household pets. The fur is dense and shiny with a substantial undercoat. The ears are initially erect but start to hang down when the rabbit is about four weeks old, often with one ear dropping before the other.
