• Basidiomycota - Basidiomycetes (Mushrooms, smuts etc)
• Ascomycota - Ascomycetes (Moulds, yeasts, lichens)

There are a number of varying but commonly used classifications of Fungi. We have divided this kingdom into the three Phyla / Divisions above and follow Margulis and Schwartz 1999 (B79) who include within this kingdom "eukaryotes that form chitinous, resistant propagules (fungal spores) and Chitinous cell walls and that lack undulipodia (that is, are amastigote, or immotile) at all stages of their life cycle (B79)". The following groups have previously been classified as separate Phyla within this Kingdom, but are now categorised under separate sections:

Deuteromyctes ("Fungi Imperfecti" - includes the "Dimorphic Fungi")
These fungi were originally considered not to have sexual stages and so were placed in a separate Phyla / Division. It is now understood that organisms previously classed as deuteromycotes are descended from the ascomycetes or the basidiomycetes and that expression of their sexual stages may be uncommon, in a very different form to the asexual stage observed or may not yet have been observed. (Where it is still uncertain as to whether they are ascomycetes (Ascomycota) or basidiomycetes (Basidiomycota), they have been included as ascomycetes). These fungi may be known by two scientific names. This is due to previous double classification of the former Deuteromycetes caused by early researchers assuming that they were different organisms in their sexual (Perfect State) and asexual forms (Imperfect State). Where known, both names have been provided within Wildpro.

Lichens (Mycophytophyta)
Lichens are an association of two organisms, a fungus and a photosynthesising symbiont and have been incorporated into the Ascomycota. The fungi are usually Ascomycetes and their symbionts either Cyanobacteria (classified as Monera) or Chlorophyta (Proctista). (B79)

Chytridiomycota (Chytrid Water Moulds)
These are considered to be fungal ancestors. Recent work on their cell structure, life history and other biology indicates that they are not true fungi and they have been included in the Proctista. (B79)
